Sitting there watching my sons, ages 6 and 8, skateboard gets a bit boring. So last week I decided to lace on my running shoes (I don't have flat skateboarding shoes) and put my hottest board shorts and strapless top on. I wear a strapless bra with my hot strapless top, but that didn't prevent my son Quinn from telling me that my boobs were going to flop out of my top. He also told me I would fall down and hurt myself. I told him not to worry and we headed off to the Coldstream skate park with two skateboards, one bike, two helmets (I didn't take mine because I didn't want to wear my geekie bike helmut), two kids, not enough water, and one mom on an adventure.
I hopped on the skateboard and headed down a really gentle slope of the park. Not so bad. A little shakier than I expected. Afterall, I am forty and I haven't boarded since I was about sixteen when I borrowed my brother's skateboard to ride the sidewalk in Calgary where I grew up.
Back and forth, up and down that gentle slope for about 10 minutes. I need a rest. The grandpa who has his four grandsons there with him is sitting beside me. He tells me, "Boy, your face is sure red." I tell him, "I always get a red face when I do sports. Always have. It's normal." He then says, "You're pretty good at that, how long have you been skateboarding?" I say, "Ten minutes." His grandson pipes up and says, "Wow. You've already improved quite a bit in ten minutes." That compliment would have been enough for me to go home happy. I kept on boarding. Then, I got up the nerve to go down a steeper hill. Halfway down I pull the plug and bail off my board into the grass. I don't have the nerve to go all the way to the bottom where it flattens out.
My other son, Soleil, age 8 gives me some tips. "Just bend your knees and then cross your arms when you go down mom. It's easy." He shows me how to do it. I look around. Good, no one is watching. Okay, down the hill I go, all the way to the bottom. I'm still standing. I'm alive. I did it!
Phew! That was fun. The kids are too hot and we're out of water. Time to load everything and everyone into the car and head home. That was a blast. I can't wait to go back to the skatepark. I may buy my own board. I'm shakey for two days afterwards, and my old injured right ankle tendons are sore, but it was worth it.
