And it’s all because of snow!!
For those who live in the Okanagan Valley, each season brings its own reason why we live here. Cross country skiers know just why this is the best place on earth: early snow.
Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre, on Silver Star Mountain, boasts of the earliest openings of any cross country ski area in North America. Sitting at 1664 metres (5500 feet) above sea level, rain in the valley translates into snow at these higher elevations. The Sovereign Lake Nordic Club is one of the largest in Canada, with 1400 members and a season that is six months long, a skier’s heaven.
This season, Nordic enthusiasts have been skiing since the 5th of November and with the large amount of snow that has fallen, the conditions of the trails is comparable to mid season.
News of the early season open explodes out into the Nordic community and skiers come from as far away as Vancouver and Washington to get on the snow sooner than their compatriots.
Downhill skiers in the Okanagan also have reason to love to live here: two great areas, Silver Star Mountain and Big White. Plus they also have ski areas within about a 2 hour drive time of Vernon: Revelstoke Mountain Resort and Sun Peaks Resort. Many have taken up cross country skiing so they don’t have to wait for the lifts to open to enjoy winter’s playground a little sooner.
Nordic skiers are gliding away the hours on some stellar snow, don’t you just want to get out and join them?
