Get your tickets for The Valentine Fundraising Dance & Silent Auction in Vernon Feb. 10

Wednesday night, February 10th, from 7:00pm - 11:00pm Sweet Smiles & Vernon's Small Business of the Year, Cotton's Chocolates will be hosting a Valentines Fundraising Dance & Silent Auction to benefit rescued children of the streets. 

Barrita Durward will be traveling to Mexico on Feb. 20th to aide three different orphanages and two schools.  This fundraising event will help aide these schools and orphanages.  This orphanage, along with the other two orphanages, rescue children off the streets who have been exploited, abused, and abandoned.

Esther, who is the house mom of the "House of Hope & Faith," in Cancun Mexico is quite ill, with cancer.  She continues to take care of the children to the best of her ability, but she and the children are in desperate need of our help.  She never sends any child away.  Her home is always open.  She began this orphanage 20 years ago, after an infant was left at her door step.

According to Barrita Durward, "She is truly an amazing soul."

Please open up your Wednesday evening and attend this charity event, held at Moejoes Night Club.  It will be a great evening filled with complimentary chocolate-dipped strawberry's, great music and a fantastic Valentine's silent auction filled with beautiful jewellery, Belgian chocolates, amazing perfumes and much, much more.

Tickets are $10 each in advance, or $15 at the door.

With the money raised from this event, Barrita will be purchasing food (six month supply of food & dairy for each orphanage), medical supplies, freezers, fridges, good shoes, school supplies, clothes, cold medicines, and vitamins.

Don't extend Spring Break for School District No. 22

School district 22 is thinking of extending spring break by 5 days. As a parent of two children, I appose this notion. I am self-employed, and I have a flexible schedule. But another 5 days out of school would mean either an additional week off work or the need to pay to put the kids into a long week camp, or daycare. Either way, the cost to my family would be at least $300 after tax dollars.

While I can handle it, I’m truly concerned about those parents who don’t have flexible schedules and can’t take the time off. That means that they are forced to put their kids into care. For families with more than two kids, this can add up. Sometimes daycare is really difficult to find too.

What about the working poor, or those who are barely making ends meet each month? It’s an extra burden. For those people who don’t have an extra support system, I am concerned. Many people don’t have family close by to help out. Or what about single moms who are already struggling?

I am already concerned with the number of Professional development days and holidays that the children have. They are out of school a lot and this adds up to a lot of missed days of work.

There has to be other alternatives.

I definitely appose the extension of Spring break. I look forward to your comments and feedback.
