Photo of the Day - Fishing off the boat on Kalamalka Lake near Vernon, BC

June 12th, 2010 was one of the nicest days of the year so far and the first time I was out on my boat with my husband and one of our boys. Here is a picture of our seven year old fishing off the boat on Kalamalka Lake near Vernon, BC.

The photo was taken with my Iphone.

We use the Kekuli Bay boat launch to access Kalamalka Lake. It's a beautiful launch and there is lots of parking. The key is to get to it early in the morning on nice weather weekends.

(Don't worry, my boy can swim and we were tied up near the shore away from boat traffic...hence the reason he is not wearing a life-jacket.)

If you plan to go fishing on Kalamalka Lake, don't forget to purchase your fishing license. We got our license at Surplus Herby's in Vernon. They have a great selection of fishing gear and very helpful staff. At Canadian Tire, we picked up the fishing regulations book and a very inexpensive fishing rod that is perfect for kids.

Lannie Houle Set To Carry Olympic Torch For Vernon, B.C.

Lannie Houle (pictured here at Wesbild Centre last week in Vernon, B.C.) will carry the Olympic Torch tomorrow, January 26, in Vernon.

Lannie wrote an essay about how she wants to play on the Women's National Hockey Team and win a gold medal at the Olympics. She has been playing hockey since age five. She now goes to school in Vilna, Alberta. When she wrote the essay, she was living in Vernon and going to Seaton School.

Summer time for kids in vernon, bc

It's time to decide what to do with the kids this summer for the months of July and August. Do I take my youngest out of daycare and save the fees? Then I would need to take the time off work. This would be a loss of income, but it would also be a reduction in costs too. Luckily, I'm self-employed and therefore have the option to do this. I'm leaning in that direction.

But then again, I might go crazy having my two boys home all summer. Either that or I'll become a very great skateboarder and bmx biker hanging out at those parks all day. And, my tan will be great too.

If I was going to put my little guys, ages 6 and 8, into summer camps, the best ones that I've found so far include the Okanagan Science Centre, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, Vernon Recreation Centre camps, and the Vernon community arts centre.

Free things to do include visiting the skateboard parks, bmx track, hiking the bx creek trail, swimming at Paddlewheel Park (my favourite park in Vernon to go with kids), walking up at Silver Star Mountain Resort, visiting Davison's Orchards, driving to the Log Barn in Enderby to see the goats, and sending them off to grandma's for a week so they can get absolutely spoiled.

It's going to be a great summer!
